B.A. (Hons.) Fashion Design (4 Years Degree Program)
Fashion Design as a discipline has evolved from being a whimsical, wearer-led, phenomenon to an industry where designers and labels establish and guide customer preferences. A formal degree in Fashion Designing is ideal for students with a penchant for the creative fields and a desire to explore their artistic and technical skills in in an industry valued north of $3 trillion globally. The programme will help students explore their creative identity and refine it further as they unpack the myriad layers of the discipline. Fashion Design being a practical discipline demands rigorous hands-on exposure with a mature awareness of the complexities of the world of Fashion. Students graduating from the programme will be able to use design thinking and creative problem-solving strategies to create appealing, sustainable and responsible fashion for a rapidly evolving industry.
The Fashion Design programme has been structured around the idea of ‘unpacking the self’ and triggering a circular progression where one eventually ‘re-builds the self’. It begins as an internal dialogue in the first year of the Fashion Design programme and progresses on to establishing a communication with the industry in the second year. This is followed by the third year where students learn to re-establish a connect with themselves as self-aware designers and arrive at their own design sensibilities. The idea is to empower students through topical projects and experiential learning to lead them to discovering their own creative identity.
At IIAD we strongly believe that students come with intrinsic knowledge. Therefore, in the very first year of their specialisation they are introduced to the fundamentals of fashion with a view to understand their own context, their being, their background, their roots and their cultural milieu. They are encouraged to question and create their personal narratives by situating themselves within historical and socio-cultural contexts. These narratives not only build various visualization techniques (such as illustrations, drawings, collages, mood boards, photography and computer aided design), but also help them investigate all other aspects of design processes. While exploring ideas through adding, subtracting, folding, layering, joining, etc. students are introduced to pattern-making, draping, construction and garment details. Students explore movement, fluidity, drapability and functionality of forms through the understanding of human body and material. Other creative practices like art, theatre and film expose students to historical perspectives of Indian and Western clothing, which leads them to start analysing and appreciating fashion trends.
In the second year they build on this reflection of their own selves and create an external dialog with the Fashion Industry. Students are readied to address the wider context of fashion through sensitively and intensely designed projects. They arrive at an advanced understanding of form, structure and material through projects such as ‘Transform & Restructure’ where they seamlessly apply complex pattern-making and draping techniques. Technical skills are further enhanced during the ‘Jacket Project’ where reverse engineering is introduced as yet another critical concept of understanding complex forms. While they situate the jacket in its social-cultural context they explore the facet of reverse engineering by deconstructing a garment to the last seam. The year concludes with the ‘Denim Project’ which is executed in close collaboration with the industry. The students question materiality by exploring industrial, selvedge and khadi denim from spinning to dyeing and finally to the various washes & finishes. They acquire an in-depth understanding of production methods, construction techniques and advanced technologies involved in the manufacturing of a denim garment.
The final year commences with a closely-mentored 16-week internship that provides practical exposure and a realistic view of the fashion industry, which further builds a deeper understanding of design practice. In order to discover their own identity through personal expression, students undertake the ‘Joining the Dots’ project which completes their learning of the entire course. The course finale is the graduate show wherein students design, curate and present an original collection that reflects their individual creative abilities and design sensibilities.
Along with intensive and rigorous design process and practice in the Fashion Design programme, the students are also exposed to and made aware of market realities of entrepreneurship, client management, IPR, ethics and other professional requirements.
The Fashion Design Programme has been designed to celebrate each student’s uniqueness, experiences and to groom them into conscious design practitioners with a thorough understanding of the design processes. A wide range of teaching and learning strategies are used to effectively impart knowledge and skills pertaining to the Fashion Designing Course.
Students are equipped with strong conceptual frameworks along with skill-sets that are seamlessly aligned to the industry. The teaching-learning philosophy is based on the bedrock of project-based learning where students are trained in ‘the approach’, akin to a master key for solving any kind of design problem that exists in our world. This is an aspect that helps them translate their influences and experiences directly into their work.
With a profound understanding of the body and garment as physical forms, students begin to view a complete picture of the Fashion Design ecosystem rather than study each component in silos. They acquire a deep understanding and knowledge of concepts, processes and how all of these contribute to their own design practice. The projects, thus woven into the curriculum across the programme, help them understand the importance of sustainability and ethical fashion practices besides the core competencies of a good fashion designer.
At IIAD, we are building the capabilities of Fashion Designing students to think conceptually in a way that they are also able to push the boundaries of the creative space of the growing global apparel industry. While they are able to think conceptually and critically, they will also play a part in both domestic and export industries. The emphasis will be on producing designers who see themselves as reflective practitioners of design, sensitive to the human aspect of production and consumption.

B.A. (Hons.) Communication Design (4 Years Degree Program)
Communication Designers design messages and create solutions through the use of appropriate language, visuals, moving images and digital experiences. Communication is fundamental to all environmental, commercial, socio-cultural and political practices. Therefore, Communication Design is one of the fastest growing design disciplines in the world today. This means that communication designers are now required in nearly all sectors of the industry – from education and healthcare to governance and rocket science! Communication design allows practitioners of the field, to embrace their creative side, which is highly gratifying yet potent in its ability to change society.
It is a discipline that draws from various schools of thought and has primarily emerged from the early schools of Applied Arts and Graphic Design. However, in today’s fast-changing world a communication design professional requires competence in diverse areas such as research, print media, photography, filmmaking, animation, game design, digital media, interaction design, new media, exhibition and experience design to name a few. We understand this emerging need and therefore empower competent and innovative design practitioners who are better suited to the fast-changing and multi-disciplinary requirements of the field. Communication designers are often employed in design studios, corporates, NGOs, and increasingly in government organizations. Many also, go on to become design entrepreneurs and consultants in their areas of specialization.
The BA Communication Design programme (validated by Kingston University) is delivered through a mix of project work, group work, lectures, seminars and assignments. The program offers a common introductory experience during the first year of specialisation, followed by two years of selected and more specialised study driven by interests and preferences. The programme concludes with a Major Design Project in the last semester of the final year, this is an amalgamation of the specialisation and is defined by student’s own path as a future designer.
For the first year, the focus of the course is on understanding, interpreting and analysing the embodied knowledge that the student already possesses. They are introduced to contemporary debates across areas such as history, theory, anthropology, design etc. Negotiating design through observation, documentation, idea generation, concept development and evaluation is encouraged. Students also focus on studying materials and materiality and their relationship to design realisation. All this helps them arrive at their professional and personal identity within an ethical framework. Teaching and learning on the course are interesting, intensive and immersive.
In the second year the focus shifts to translating and negotiating articulated knowledge with trans-contextual subject areas. It provides an intellectual framework to students that help them to move away from a binary mode of thinking. They use research to develop concepts and ideas which enables them to contribute to critical commentary and debate. The course goes on to help students understand the translation of literal and figurative contexts within the design process enabling them to present individual design narratives using appropriate media. Students are also introduced to an understanding of conceptual, aesthetic and structural issues involved in designing a project and are encouraged to focus on the integration of design, materiality and making skills necessary to complete an original outcome. By the end of the year, students are geared to develop into reflective, ethical entrepreneurial professionals.
In the final year the focus shifts back to the student “ The designer – self” enabling him/her to reflect and synthesise the learning of the first 2 years and thereby develop into ethical and purposeful design practitioners. Students learn to locate their own design practice within a specific context and use a critical debate to develop a rationale for their design direction. They learn to confidently generate and present a fully resolved creative design solutions keeping in mind the specific context of the problem presented to them.
At the end of the three year programme students are well poised to take on the formidable challenges of the industry and go forth into the world.Their successes are celebrated at the end of the year with a Design show and graduation ceremony.
Note: Communication design is much more than a simple graphic design course. It includes a range of media that expresses information, data, emotion, culture, and aesthetics. A degree in Communication Design will help in laying down a strong foundation across various fields including animation, multimedia, graphics designing, illustrations, typography, photography, logo design, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, and print media design.
We believe that for teaching to be effective it should be aligned to and synonymous with how people learn. Therefore, we nurture the individualistic streak in all students and encourage a culture of ‘learning by doing’, which enables and challenges the students to develop and evolve their own creative process. This is further instilled in the students by following a ‘project based approach’ rather than a purely theoretical one. Our communication design programme does not offer separate specializations and instead we expose our students to all the fields that fall within the domain. This makes our students multidisciplinary thinkers and broadens their horizon. However, the students can position themselves as specialists in a desired field through a careful selection of their projects.
Our programme encourages collaborative learning across disciplines, wherein students work directly with their peers throughout the institution. Group work and active collaboration between staff and students is encouraged. Students learn in a studio environment which forms the fulcrum around which the entire teaching learning philosophy is based.
Design is a problem solving activity and as a practitioner every designer may have to address different and challenging project briefs in the industry. We recreate this industry scenario at our design school and pose similar challenges in the studio-based learning atmosphere where students are better enabled (through mentoring and guidance) to respond to these varied design challenges for the very first time. We make them succeed by helping students devise their own personal design process which through repetitive application becomes intuitively ingrained in their practice. The design process is flexible and can be recalibrated as appropriate. At a advanced level, the students also test their learnings through internships and industry based projects. We also emphasise on innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, design thinking, and user centred design. Therefore our design programme empowers students to become reflexive practitioners.
The communication design faculty comprises of diverse specialists who have made exceptional contributions to the industry and proved their mettle on both national and international platforms. This makes them very aware of the needs and the redundancies of the industry. Our ratio of one faculty for every ten students helps us give detailed and individual attention to each student and thoroughly mentor their development.
Communication Design is about transferring of an idea, a message, a ‘call to action’ through visuals. The written word, moving graphics and interface help communicate this message to the client/audience.

Interior Architecture and Design (4 Years Degree Program)
At the intersection of architecture, interior and experience design, the Interior Architecture and Design programme provides a multi-disciplinary approach to transforming existing spaces and places. In increasingly Urban Environments, the emphasis on the design and working of a building, inside out, has gained tremendous importance. The programme focuses on examining existing structures and transforming their interior through relevant design interventions and renovations that give existing buildings a new life.
Unlike courses in interior design and decoration, the Interior Architecture programme focuses on spatial design and detailing, adaptive reuse and retrofitting as well as architectural addition and refurbishment.
The programme addresses a wide range of spaces, from domestic to retail, institutional to commercial and set/production design to issues of conservation. Whether designing a structure, situation or event, the interior architect responds to how society interacts with, and inhabits space.
Built Environment is an intrinsic part of our lives. The Interior Architecture programme is aimed at this intrinsic understanding of this environment which one inhabits in its various forms. The programme is designed to ensure the students’ development as successful and ethical practitioners by equipping them with the specialized skills to understand principles, processes and practices within the field of Interior Architecture and Design.
The Interior Architecture course at IIAD is envisioned to allow students to become critical thinkers and self-reflective design practitioners, by providing them with a multi-disciplinary, intellectually rigorous and learner centric environment. A range of teaching and learning strategies have been adopted to enable the students to develop specialist skills and knowledge of the discipline.
A deep understanding of the Built Environment, it’s fundamental principles like technology, history, politics, culture, people, identity, and importantly, economics, along with technical aspects of services and construction are at the core of the programme. These lay emphasis on understanding the discipline comprehensively and as part of a larger knowledge system. Project-based learning further provides insight into industry practices and exposure to contemporary discourses within the field. Students are further encouraged to develop a strong design process which incorporates these aspects and builds on their own knowledge systems.
The program also cuts across the various design disciplines offered at the institute allowing students to understand design as a holistic phenomenon and also encouraging a multidisciplinary learning environment.
The course at IIAD is based on the concept of circular learning progression where the student begins their 1st year of the discipline with unpacking their own embedded knowledge which moves on to the 2nd year focussing on making an industry connect and finally bringing it back to developing and representing themselves as successful reflective practitioners of the field in the 3rd and final year. The emphasis of the course is to provide an experiential learning environment with topical and live projects. In doing so the traditional divides of theory vs practice, studio vs non-studio subjects are removed and an integrative, immersive and a total learning environment is encouraged.
At IIAD we strongly believe that students come with intrinsic knowledge. Therefore, in the very first year of their specialization they are introduced to the fundamental principles and contexts of the Built Environment with a view to understand their own context, their being, their background, their roots and their cultural milieu. They are encouraged to question and create their personal narratives by situating themselves within historical and socio-cultural contexts. The year begins with the project ‘Reading and Production of Space’ focusing on translation of ideas into a physical space, while understanding principles such as anthropometrics, ergonomics, aesthetic harmony, besides the contextual systems it operates in, culminating into making scale models of respective designs. Emphasis is on becoming observant of the interactions with the spaces we inhabit. Further building on this knowledge is done by looking at ‘Material Entanglements’ within the Interior Architecture industry. Besides the current practices, there is also a push to create an awareness and sensitivity towards indigenous practices, traditional techniques and local identities.
The most important component of this year is to learn representation skills and this is incorporated in the various projects and also as a standalone project. ‘Representation of Space’ for an Interior architect is not just about learning to draw plans, sections and elevation but to design ways of communicating ideas and interventions. The project exposes students to the various tools and technologies – digital as well as analogue, available in the field of art and design; from sketching, creating storyboards, learning to draft to learning 2D and 3D visualisation software.
The first year includes introducing students to alternate ways of design thinking, by bringing in experts from various backgrounds (not limited to architecture or interior design). These are conceptualised as plug-in within projects to initiate a dialogue on innovative techniques and contemporary debates about sustainable practices, Indian craft traditions, socio-cultural and political issues, principles of Universal Design, technological advances, environmental issues and many more.
In the 2nd year, students engage with the process and practice of Interior Architecture and Design through work on multiple projects. The emphasis here is on learning by doing as well as imbibing an in depth disciplinary understanding of Interior Architecture and Design. It aims at developing design skills and help them oversee the entire design process from designing on paper to the execution on the site. To carry on with our philosophy of learning with hands and the act of ‘making’, students work on LIVE projects. Meeting clients, giving regular presentations, dealing with contractors and recording their observation from the site, makes students’ learning within the projects a lot more intensive than just designing hypothetically on paper.
Students in this year work on a variety of projects from Retail, Hospitality, Residential to Product Design. There is an emphasis that each student understands the contextual and intellectual underpinnings of these major design typologies. They constantly reflect on their work and are able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationships between multiple contexts within which design is situated. Also, technical inputs related to various services like air conditioning, electrical, plumbing and lighting are also plugged into each project. Training for digital skills also becomes critical in the second year for better presentation and communication of design ideas. Thus, the design studio functions as an integrative immersive and total learning environment.
The final year commences with a 12 week industry internship that provides practical exposure and realistic view of the industry, which further builds a deeper understanding of design practice. In order to discover their own identity through personal expression, students undertake one major design project which culminates their learning of the entire course. This project transitions towards developing their own design philosophies and practices. The course ends with a capstone thesis project wherein students design and present a large scale project that reflects their individual creative abilities and design sensibilities. Students are also given exposure to entrepreneurial skills to enable them to run a successful design practice.
Architects essentially deal with spaces - they effectively manipulate space to accommodate the (human) activity that is to take place there. An interior architect is more concerned with the interior spaces and focuses on how it is meant to be inhabited, how it will be used and what will be the experience while using it. The aesthetics involved in Interior Designing are a bit more nuanced than those pertinent to exterior composition. So, students are trained to explore and discover creative solutions to optimise the interior built environment. Many a time the user knows what they want as an end product, but need assistance in how to achieve it and convert a vision into visuals. Interior Architecture and Interior Designing demands having knowledge of, but not limited to, an understanding of function, knowledge of aesthetics and an understanding of materials, products, textures, fabrics, colour, lighting and other factors that go into creating the atmosphere and mood of specific environments.
The skills developed by a student while pursuing a course in Interior Architecture and Design at IIAD would adequately equip him/her to work across various platforms like :-
Residential Design (homes, apartment complexes, community living complexes, etc.)

Fashion being a fast-paced industry requires professionals with the acumen to drive successful fashion business models and units. Students of the Postgraduate programme in Fashion Business Management will explore and evaluate new fashion markets, products and trends from a commercial and strategic perspective. The Course Team will provide detailed insights on differentiating Luxury from Mass fashion; Haute-Couture from Ready-to-Wear besides understanding apparel, accessories and footwear as fashion business units. In order to promote and communicate the brand well, students will be trained to identify key success factors of a fashion venture. Intensive modules and projects enable deeper understanding of a product’s life-cycle – from concept to production which is followed by marketing and sales.
During the programme, the graduates develop an understanding of the key role played by brand management and marketing in fashion using traditional and new media. The programme enables a sound understanding of customer expectations, market trends, brand loyalties, services and pricing models in addition to delivering an effective customer experience. Students will also analyse how a brand’s image must be aligned with the distribution channel and brand/product portfolio for its success.
Critical skills like time-management, self-discipline and a strong work ethic are also nurtured and enhanced during the programme. Research, analytics and decision-making skills are seamlessly integrated in the curriculum and form an integral part of the teaching-learning methodology.
