The relationship between humans and products is almost as old as the history of human civilization. The field of product design is wide and encompasses multiple verticals within it. One may find numerous possibilities to intervene at multiple levels and at various scales and stages.
The Product Design Programme at TDV prepares the student to design products, not just for the current needs, but also products and systems of the future. It moves beyond a mere redesign or styling exercise to questioning the context, the use, the meaning and associations of each product and its purpose. The students question the brief, digging deeper to uncover the core problem or undefined need and then set out to solve that through product design interventions.
Categories : Undergraduate (B. des) Start Date : July 2020 Duration : 4 years full time Seats : 12 Accreditation : UGC recognized degree in Bachelor of Design in Product Design.

Materials, forms and manufacturing processes – Since the field involves physical manifestations of design ideas, it is very important to be aware of the materialityand the process of actualization of the ideas. Materials, forms and manufacturing processes is a mega course comprising of process of selection and application, technical details, assembly techniques, finishes and many more. Form development is an integral part of the process, but is not independent of material considerations and never supersedes the functionality of the product.
Product development – model making, product ergonomics, prototyping and other such course help students develop necessary skills to tackle the most complex product development.
Human centered design – UX and UI become important aids that facilitate the design explorations of the product design student at TDV. Courses like colour theory, ethnography, psychology help in keeping the students’ focus on the users.
The students go through a course in Product Ergonomics to better understand the ergonomic functions of a product and how could one tweak the design to make the product better adaptive to audiences. They work on detailing and finishing through constantly exploring and making prototypes throughout the process. They also are exposed to interesting courses like Structure and Kinetics, Packaging… during their education at TDV.
Through 10 design projects the students are encouraged to apply this learning and much more while working with real world problems and clients.
Spaces have a lot of impact on the physical, psychological, cognitive and behavioural aspects of the end users. The spatial qualities define and determine how we feel, think and act in a certain setting. Hence it is very important understand and appreciate the role of interior design in shaping our home, offices, institutions and public buildings.

Admission process
TDV ADMISSION PROCESS
It is a specifically designed test that assesses an individual’s various dimensions. TDV has imbibed a multicultural approach and is spread across the nation in cities like- Delhi,
Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhopal, Kochi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Noida, and Kolkata. The institute’s entrance test is branched out to multiple channels reflecting upon the intrinsic personality traits that
a capable design curator must inherit.
Correlative quiz : It tests the awareness level of aspirantsin the form of a kind of treasure hunt that offers clues,
and one has to navigate to reach somewhere; designed to make them understand correlations between people/ places/ objects/ events etc.to test the presence of mind in reading
the question correctly because there are trick questions.
Comprehensive Question : This is for ideation and visual representation. The potential for all the attributes is
evaluated in this question-the ability. To imagine a scenario in a holistic manner and in parts (courage to think outside the box/compassion). To visualize the representation and draw clearly/proportionately
(aptitude/skill). To observe from memory/add details to the imagined environment and make it enriched and vivid (awareness/perseverance)
Question for taking positions/justifying them : In his book,‘ViP-Vision in Product Design’, Dr. Paul Hekkert says
that design is about taking positions; building arguments on why it is what it is and being able to justify with logic and rationale. This section tests
the ability to develop an opinion or a perspective of an issue; one that is not random and whimsical but justified convincingly
to evaluate values and priorities among this age group
to represent innovatively, the ideation although the focus is on the design thinking
Creating thumbnails : This gives the student an opportunity to express the core concept or the basic concept of what
he/she is trying to express and are very useful in visual communication. The exercise is designed to address multiple meanings:
To evaluate lateral thinking based on the interpretation-from the most obvious to least obvious.
The response could also indicate an awareness of what is happening in the world.
Situational test : The situational test at TDV tests the candidates with realistic yet hypothetical scenarios
and asks the test takers to build models around the same, which has been identified as a brilliant method to check the creative and innovative skills with respect to spontaneity.
The test focuses to surface the inventive/experimental/imaginative and artistic capabilities of the candidates by putting them into a time-bound situation and indulging their minds to construct something
meaningful. The situational test helps to delineate the constructive thought-process of the candidate as well as his behavioral tendency and personality.
Personal Interview & Portfolio discussion : A precise and clear communication of the candidate individually,
to the designated mentor. A brief discussion with mentor about personal goals, aspirations, opinions and ideologies.
Please note the following : Students applying for B.Des in Space Design and have a valid NATA score are EXEMPTED from the entrance exam and will be called for the interview/ portfolio review directly.
